The Proudly
We Served website launched on August 1, 1997. It was hosted by Geocities,
one of the first free website hosting services on the web. Geocities
was later purchased by Yahoo!
The site won a number of Geocities awards and was featured on boston.com.
It has been recognized by The
History Channel in the US and Canada's History
Television.
In 2000, the domain name ussmason.org was purchased and the site
has
been
hosted
by
Digital
Space ever
since.
The area of the website
entitled "The Mason Story" is
based on the narrative I produced for a National Park Service
exhibit dedicated to the USS Mason in 1995. This led to the organizing
of a crew's reunion in Boston in May 1995.
The exhibit moved to the USS
Constitution Museum and
was mounted there into the Fall of 1995. In February 1996, the
exhibit travelled
to New York City where it served as the backdrop for the launch
of American Legacy
Magazine that month at the Forbes Galleries.
Although the exhibit was
largely dismantled, elements remain in use. Currently, visitors
can see some of the photos from the exhibit in the National Park
Service
Visitor
Center at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston.
Proudly We Served/USSMason.org has had almost 60000 visitors.
